The sixth season follows the Paladins of Voltron working in the newly-formed alliance with Prince- Oops! Sorry, Emperor Lotor, as they continue with their plan in improving the Galra Empire and bringing peace and order to the galaxy, but remaining factions of the Empire aren’t so easy to give up their old ways and with the evil witch Hagar still on the lose, things might not go according to plan for our heroes. After several months of anticipation, the long-awaited season has arrived, and after finishing binge-watching it, I’m very happy to say that this is yet another flawless season from start to finish!
Like the previous season, the main story flows well from the start, with the third episode being the only one of the season that isn’t essential to the main plot, but I’ll get to that later, as we see more of Lotor and Princess Allura bonding as they work together in understanding the secrets of Altean alchemy and bringing order to the galaxy after millennia of war, with Keith continuing on secret missions with the Blade of Mamora, including discovering a member he’s currently working with revealed to be his mother, and Shiro continuing to show suspicious signs that has been puzzling fans since the fourth season!
The characters remain as memorable, well-established, and more fleshed-out than before with new amazing moments, both emotional and funny, particularly Keith, Lance, Shiro and even Lotor! Once again, I continue to praise the talented voice cast and the writers for delivering those many wonderful words of dialogue! The action is non-stop excitement and beautifully engaging, especially in the last three episodes, packed with emotional weight, high stakes, fresh surprises, all delivered by the stunning quality 2D animation combined brilliantly with computer animation from Studio Mir! As the third episode of the season, I truly call this one of the best filler episodes of the series as its simply about the Paladins and Coran playing the show’s version of Dungeons & Dragons called Monsters & Mana, and even if you’ve never played the game, you can easily recognize the elements, such as role playing, the locations they travel, and what makes the episode even more fun is how the characters react as they learn the game, the characters they all play as, and the creativity of the action and scenery, all while delivering references to Legend of Zelda, Harry Potter, even World of Warcraft and other online RPG games! Trust me when I say this, its a ton of fun and a nice break from the main plot and intense action.
The crew of Voltron: Legendary Defender has once again delivered another well-written season, packed with more intense action, strong characterization driven by top-notch voice acting, new surprises, a solid fun filler episode for ease, jaw-dropping plot twists, and animation that’s more fluid, balanced in color, and more beautiful than in the last few seasons that’s pushed to new levels! I really can’t wait to see how the next season can top this one and take the series to greater heights than it already has!
